The 76th Creative Arts Emmy Awards: Highlights, Surprises, and Predictions For Next Week’s Primetime Show

When Hannah Waddingham opened night one of the 76th Creative Arts Emmy Awards with a joke about the thousand-degree weather outside, the packed room giggled and sighed with relief as everyone had been comfortably seated inside a cool, air-conditioned theater by then. At that point, the only heat to contend with was the race to take home a trophy.

The two-day event, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 7 and 8, celebrated the best artistic and technical achievements in unscripted television and alternative programming and set the stage with awards across the board, honoring below-the-line talent. As the industry gears up for the Primetime Emmys on September 15, the Creative Arts Emmys saw some incredible milestone moments, a few big surprises, and left everyone eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the Emmy saga.

FX’s “Shōgun,” which stands as this year’s most nominated show with 25 acknowledgments, took home the first prize on night one for “Shōgun – The Making Of Shōgun” in the category of Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction Or Reality Series, beating out “The Daily Show,” “The Crown,” “Hacks,” and “Saturday Night Live.” The celebrated series broke records on Sunday night, winning the most Emmys ever (14) for a single television season.

“Shōgun” swept in the categories of Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Period Costumes, Best Production Design, Best Main Title Design, Best Special Visual Effects, Best Period/Fantasy Makeup, Best Prosthetic Makeup, Best Stunt Performance, Best Casting for a Drama, Best Period/Fantasy Hairstyling, Best Picture Editing, and Best Cinematography. Néstor Carbonell also took home the award for Best Guest Actor in a Drama. The award was a long time coming for the actor, whose television credits include shows like “Lost,” and “Suddenly Susan.” Carbonell spoke backstage about it being a full circle moment for him as he was gearing up to hop on a plane to direct an episode of “Law & Order,” the show that gave him his first guest starring role.

The upcoming Primetime Emmys will see Anna Sawai compete in the Best Actress category for her role as Toda Mariko. She’s up against Imelda Staunton (for the final season of ‘The Crown’), Maya Erksine (‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’), Reese Witherspoon (‘The Morning Show’), Jennifer Aniston (‘The Morning Show’), and Carrie Coon (‘The Gilded Age’). While Staunton is a heavy favorite, after Sunday’s performance, it seems likely that “Shōgun” will continue its winning streak next week.

The clear frontrunner over the weekend was FX, with 27 Creative Arts Emmy wins. Netflix came in second with 18 wins, Apple TV+ had 15, Disney+ won nine, HBO and Max collected eight trophies, ABC, CBS, NBC, Hulu, Peacock, and National Geographic each won seven, while Prime Video received four.

Night two was a big night for FX, as Jamie Lee Curtis hit a career milestone, taking home her very first Emmy for guest actress on season two of “The Bear.” The win comes just after Curtis won her first Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 2023 for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” When asked about the EGOT, the actress chuckled, “I can’t sing at all, and I’ve never been on stage… I can’t imagine…”

“I just never thought in my life that I would get to do work at this level of depth, and complexity, and intelligence, and it’s just been the thrill of my creative life these last couple of years that I get these opportunities,” the newly-minted Emmy winner added. “I’m humbled and incredibly grateful.”

Curtis’s win highlighted the massive achievement we saw for women over the weekend. She spoke on perseverance, patience, truth, honesty, courage, and the ability to believe in yourself, opinions echoed by many award-winners throughout both nights.

On night one, we saw two-time Oscar nominee Angela Bassett in the first-time Emmy-winner category. After nine nominations, the actress won the award for outstanding narration for her part in “Queens,” the National Geographic docuseries about matriarchies in the wild. Bassett said she was inspired to do the project after thanking her female-led production team and pointed out it was the first in wildlife documentary filmmaking. “I was just a girl who just wanted to act, and my mentors were way out ahead of me, and I just looked to them for that inspiration and hope… I just put my focus, my energy, and my love to try to make it happen…”

“All the women behind the scenes,” Bassett said, made this project significant. “And they did it with such excellence and such passion.” Maya Rudolph was another big winner from night one. Taking home Emmy number six, the “SNL” favorite won her fourth award for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance, playing Connie the Hormone Monstress on Netflix’s “Big Mouth.” Rudolph is up for three more Emmys this Sunday – one for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series (‘Loot’) and two for “Saturday Night Live” (Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics and Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series). Rudolph returns to “SNL” this fall for its 50th season, where she’ll be reprising the role of Vice President Kamala Harris leading up to the 2024 election.

Backstage, Emmy in hand, she spoke about her love of the sketch comedy show. “I feel like I am connected somehow to an incredible time in this country and an excitement that I haven’t felt in a long time,” Rudolph tells Awards Buzz about playing the presidential nominee. “I’m very honored to be associated with that.”

“Girls State,” the companion film to 2020’s “Boys State,” drove home the message of female empowerment, especially in politics, during a year that may see America’s first female president. The two-time Emmy-winning documentary from Apple TV+ follows teenage girls from Missouri who participate in a democratic experiment that teaches them how to construct a government.

Awkwafina and Sandra Oh won their first Emmys for producing “Quiz Lady.” It was the “Nora from Queens” star’s first nomination, and while she was on hand to accept, Oh, who has been nominated 14 times, was at TIFF when the news came of their win. In the past, Oh had been nominated for “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Killing Eve,” and “SNL.” It was a full circle moment as “Quiz Lady” made its premiere at TIFF last year, almost to the day.

Some other first-time winners were not on hand to accept their award. “The Traitors” host Alan Cumming won the award for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program, breaking RuPaul’s winning streak. Pat Sajak was also missing from the night. The “Wheel of Fortune” host just retired after 40-plus years and was not in attendance to take home his first Emmy.

Other no-shows included the heavily favorited Jon Bernthal, who won his first Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series for “The Bear.” Both he and Jamie Lee Curtis won for the episode “Fishes.” The FX show totaled 23 nominations this year, setting a new most-ever record for a comedy. The show picked up seven wins over the weekend, coming in second to “Shōgun.” Michaela Coel was also not in attendance to pick up her second Emmy, this time for Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series for her role in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”

Eric André won his first Emmy for Outstanding Performer In A Short Form Comedy Or Drama Series for Adult Swim’s “The Eric Andre Show,” and producer and activist Fisher Stevens won his first Emmy for Netflix’s “Beckham” in the category of Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series. Fisher also took the opportunity to point out the importance of voting.

Coming in hot on Sunday night were songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who clinched a historic EGOT win for the “Only Murders In The Building” tune, “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?,” with Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. The Hulu show is now in its fourth season, earning 49 nominations and seven wins in its entirety.

Perhaps one of the biggest highlights of the entire weekend came when Dick Van Dyke’s wife, Arlene, who served as executive producer for CBS’s “Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic,” won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded). While some boasted the “Mary Poppins” star’s historic win (beating Norman Lear’s record as the oldest Emmy winner), and Van Dyke even danced on stage while accepting the award, a dispute later came that the (almost) 99-year-old television veteran star was not credited as executive producer. Therefore, the win wasn’t technically his. Still, it put the “Bye Bye Birdie” actor front and center on Saturday night. How does he want to be remembered? “For laughter, I hope. Hopefully. Making people laugh for 75 years. I’ve been in the business 75 years. I can’t believe it, that I’m still here and performing. I’m looking for work…” Van Dyke joked before answering more questions backstage.

Other notable wins at the 76th Creative Arts Emmys: “Saturday Night Live” won six Emmys on night one, “Jim Henson Idea Man” took home five, “Blue Eye Samurai” won four, as did “The Oscars,” with Jimmy Kimmel there to accept. Kimmel confirmed that even with the win, he still won’t be returning to host the award-winning award show. ABC’s “Shark Tank” took back the Emmy for Outstanding Structured Reality Program, marking its fifth overall win, gathering all six sharks (Mark Cuban, Robert Herjavec, Barbara Corcoran, Lori Greiner, Daymond John, and Kevin O’Leary) on stage together. And, after seven nominations, composer Siddhartha Khosla won for Outstanding Music Composition For A Series (Original Dramatic Score) for the “Only Murders In The Building” episode “Sitzprobe.” He also cheered on Kamala Harris.

An edited version of The 76th Creative Arts Emmys will air on Saturday, September 14, at 8 p.m. on FXX. Eugene and Dan Levy will host the 76th Primetime Emmys, which will air on ABC on September 15, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. PDT.
